Former Iraqi Air Defense Camp in Baghdad

Heavily bombed during Operation Shock and Awe, the compound's main buildings are now massive heaps of rubble, with a few long, grey tubular US missiles scattered on the debris.

Following the US led invasion of Iraq, at least 400 families moved into this camp.

Fallujah is devastating to drive through. There is more destruction and rubble than I've ever seen in my life; even more than in Rafah, Gaza. The US has leveled entire neighborhoods, and about every third building is destroyed or damaged from US artillery.

Cathy returned to the United States in November of 2003, but she hopes to travel to Iraq again in 2004 and renew contact with the many friends that she has in Iraq. Shia Muslims Join Sunni in Fallujah Cleanup

On May 6, 2005 a group of Shi'a Muslims called Muslim Peacemaker Team (MPT) traveled to the Sunni-dominated city of Fallujah from as far away as Kerbala and Najaf to help their Sunni counterparts clean up rubble from the previous U.S. assault on the city.

Since 9-11, Tychostup has been working on independent photography project capturing the peace movement, entitled, "Defining Patriotism". "My commitment is to get these photos shown in as many places as possible to encourage people to actively participate in a peace movement that does indeed exist, or at the very least, to help allay the fear of those who might be afraid to speak out in the face of the war rhetoric."

With the Iraq Peace Team, Cathy remained in Iraq throughout the most recent invasion and during the first ten days of US Coalition Force occupation. While in Iraq, she remains in correspondence with a wide network of people through the assistance of companions with whom she lives and works at the Maryhouse Catholic Worker community in New York City.

Umm Haider's family and friends in Jumariyah

In Jumariyah, a small neighborhood of Basra, Iraq, John Farrell and Cathy Breen visited the family of Umm Haider, whose son Haider was killed in 1999 by a US cruise missile and whose son Mostafa was badly maimed in that same attack.

Jumariyah remains one of the poorest neighborhoods in Iraq, and the postwar change of power to British forces has meant little or no improvement for people struggling to survive everyday in neighborhoods like this all over Iraq.

These photos are from a visit by John Farrell and Kathy to Kelly to the family of Umm Haider, a friend of Voices in the Wilderness. As Umm Haider was in the United States, seeking medical care for her son Mostafa, her sisters and mother were very hospitable to John and Kathy in Iraq, with whom they spoke very candidly of the dangers of everyday life in occupied Iraq.
